Nothing beats driving through the heart of Central Florida, shaded from the harsh afternoon sun in tunnels of Spanish moss dripping off canopies of massive ancient oaks.  This week I found myself on a relaxing road trip through Micanopy, McIntosh and Cross Creek--three ridiculously quaint little villages just south of Gainesville that simply ooze Southern charm and historic cracker style.

    Here comes summer

My God do I love the Panhandle. Having exhausted Central Florida’s beaches over my years in Orlando, I’ve newly discovered our state’s vast Northern offerings. With the weather (finally!) heating up last weekend, I made a pilgrimage up Interstate 75 and along I-10 to the beloved Highway 30A – my absolute favorite stretch of Florida’s beachy coastline. The best of the best – as they say.

When I drive past the Boca Raton Resort I feel a bit wistful. It’s hard not to. The pretty pink Mediterranean Revival “pseudo-Spanish style” landmark is an Addison Mizner dream (circa 1926) and remains stunning to this day. Although this is a members-only venue, getaway packages open to the public include the resort’s lux facilities. Sweet, right?

On a recent trip to Miami Beach I found the perfect spot to set up home base for a pedestrian tour of the “new” Sunny Isles Beach. Marenas Resort, tucked oceanside along the strip, is a tall handsome tower that contrasts with the memory of roadside motels that lined Miami Beach’s Highway A1A (Collins Ave.) decades ago.
