Key West's Casa Marina Resort

I love Key West for its Old Town, where funky bars, restaurants, shops and Ernest Hemingway’s Home and Museum make for a lively experience. But when it comes to serious relaxation I prefer to sway in a hammock and rest my head at the historic Casa Marina Resort—just far enough from the cacophony and crowds for which Key West is famous, but close enough to bicycle over to the main drag, Duval Street, when the urge strikes.

Even though I’m a 20-year resident of Orlando, I had yet to make it down to the Peabody hotel to behold the famous marching of the Peabody ducks. This past Monday evening, I got to see the winged waddlers walk the red carpet, led by their gold-and-crimson-clad duck master, to the timbres of John Philip Sousa's “King Cotton March.”

When Emeril’s Tchoup Chop opened in Universal’s Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando a few years ago, it was one of my go-to restaurants for Asian-inspired dishes. Recently I popped back in and surprisingly found one of Orlando’s best chefs running the kitchen: Greg Richie.

Sure, Miami is the Gateway to the Americas, but it seems like the Ritz-Carlton South Beach isn't only steps from Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive, but a short jaunt from the Champs-Elysees, an Abu Dhabi marketplace, and the posh outskirts of London.

Chihuly Art Unveiled in St. Pete

Well on its way to being Florida’s next artsy town, St. Petersburg debuted the exquisite Chihuly Collection (chihulycollectionstpete.com) last weekend, welcoming the works of Seattle artist Dale Chihuly, a pioneer of the studio glass movement, to a sleek venue on Beach Drive, just steps from the downtown waterfront.

What I love most about Fort Lauderdale is its beach— a long sandy stretch with a power walking-friendly sidewalk designed for exercise as well as people watching and casual mingling. Last weekend I paired my beach visit with a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale (ritzcarlton.com), which is designed to resemble a luxury cruise ship.

Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week

Last Friday in Sarasota, I joined the town’s foodies at Libby’s and Derek’s Culinary Casual for Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week (savorsarasota.com). Through June 14, diners can pick and choose from 33 restaurants where multi-course meals are just $15 for lunch and $25 for dinner. This unbelievable deal is an opportunity for diners to get out and discover Sarasota’s culinary scene without breaking the bank.

Seasoning the Steak

Football, steak and coach Don Shula are as American as apple pie. Since retiring from the game, Shula has built an empire around red meat. The latest addition is Shula’s 347 Grill.

It seems like just yesterday that I was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Disney World’s California Grill, the 15th-floor restaurant in the Contemporary Resort where the entertainment giant’s climb up the gourmet ladder began. Today we gathered to toast the restaurant’s 15th anniversary with a lunch prepared by chef Brian Piasecki and complemented with California wines selected by sommelier Bridget Sherren.

A Fresh Perspective

Soft music, flickering candles, fluffy white robes and a deep exhale–that’s what I found at Orlando’s newly opened Fresh Med Spas. Peaceful trees and birds adorn the robin egg-blue and white walls, creating a tranquil setting. Before my session, spa therapist Wendy helped me determine my needs. We discussed a possible regiment and she gave me tips on how to achieve my goals.
