A Day at Golden Beach

Town of Golden Beach

It’s a gem of a town. All 1.8 miles of it. At 81-years-old, Golden Beach is a private oceanfront enclave that’s sandwiched between coastal Hallandale Beach to the north and Sunny Isles Beach to the south. Blink as you drive through and you just might miss it.

Robert Broward Architecture

Jacksonville is fantastic for architecture buffs. Iconic mid-century modern architecture abounds in the St. Johns River city—from the likes of William Morgan, Taylor Hardwick and Robert Broward. A full day symposium conducted by the Jacksonville chapter of the AIA (American Institute of Architects) honored the enduring designs of Robert Broward, a fellowship student of Frank Lloyd Wright.

South Beach

With South Beach Wine & Food Festival tickets in hand, I decided to call One Bal Harbour Resort & Spa (oneluxuryhotels.com) home for two nights. Just fifteen minutes north of South Beach, I thought it would be perfect. Was it ever. Eighteen gleaming stories, the property’s view leaves you breathless. The location—at the edge of the Haulover inlet and the Atlantic Ocean—is memorable. And it’s exactly that watery scenery that makes this a knockout destination.

Show House Eye Candy

West Palm's City Place South Tower is the glam locale of the 2010 Red Cross Show House (redcrossshowhouse.org). The preview party lured plenty of local glitterati. It all started on the ninth floor's stunning pool club deck, a picturesque tropical oasis. Once sated with exquisite hors d'oeuvres from Chef Zach Bell and a glass of pink bubbly, I went in pursuit of the four penthouse interiors.

I'm a spa monger, so when the lovely Seagate Hotel and Spa in Delray Beach opened, I knew I'd be experiencing its treatment menu soon.

New in Midtown Miami

Midtown is no longer no man's land. Ever since the Miami neighborhood debuted a couple of years ago, there was little but slick condo towers, a Target and Loehman's. Today, two new European-inspired hot spots stand a chance of luring folks away from downtown and the neighboring Design District. Low-slung sofas, plush, zebra-striped rugs and a bevy of bartenders that look like they belong on a hip, MTV reality show give the Bardot lounge (bardotmiami.com) a dark and sexy vibe - as does co-owner Josh Fisher.

In Good Company

What housing slump? It was a field day for dapper real estate moguls when Trump Hollywood (trumphollywood.com) recently made its debut. The latest luxury condo with 200 residences - priced from an estimated $1.3 to $7 million -is the collaboration between the Related Group and Donald Trump. On hand epitomizing the glam (big time) were Related Group's Jorge Perez and Donald Trump, Jr., both nattily-clad. On Ocean Drive just south of Hollywood Blvd., Trump Hollywood's glass tower is style galore.

Cool Show, Cooler House

Visionary Coconut Grove architect Max Strang (strangarchitects.com) is known for designing modern homes with heaps of style. So it comes as no surprise that his residence caught the eye of Burn Notice (usanetwork .com/series/burnnotice), an über-cool show on the USA Network about a former spy and his cohorts.

Midtown Walk-About

I recently journeyed to the Design District to see the knockout Linah Brazilian kitchen collection new to Ornare (ornare.com). But first, I decided to stroll North Miami Avenue a bit. Smart move. Foo dogs greet you upon entering Midtown Consignment (305-573-5307),  then three tail-wagging Brussel Griffons follow. This unexpected bright space (pictured at left) is one of the latest once-empty locales to find life in this revitalized neighborhood.

Why Design Matters

If I was to describe Avant Gallery in the Miami Design District (www.avantgallery.com), I would have to make up words like "color-liscious." Owner Dmitry Prut has an eye for the spectacular. Look up when you walk in and you'll see what I mean. There's an amethyst red Murano glass Venini chandelier hanging smack in the center that's a total knockout. I just returned from an evening event there to launch Design Matters, a series of lectures being presented by HOME Miami and Florida Travel + Life (we're sister publications).
