windsurfing at Anastasia Island State Park

On a recent trip to historic St. Augustine, I was surprised to discover windsurfing at nearby Anastasia Island State Park, just a short ride from the Old City across the Bridge of Lions. The park is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Salt Run, a three-mile tidal lagoon, where instructors from Anastasia Water Sports teach first-time students like me how to handle the board and maneuver the boom and mast.

Kayaking on the Wakulla River

All I can say is that kayaking on a steamy Saturday for two-hours plus on the Wakulla River, about 20 miles south of Tallahassee, was a serious memory maker. As I got my bearings on the river, I entered the chillin' zone. It is decidedly rare when packing for a getaway inside the Sunshine State that I ever take much more than sundresses and strappy sandals, but this weekend I was throwing sweaters and scarves into my case--and not just for fashion reasons either. I was off to Amelia Island, which is about as north as Florida gets before treading into Georgia territory, and this cold and rainy weekend it really did feel Northern.

Perfect Water and Sand

After scouting the state's beaches for three-plus years, I've drawn the conclusion that the best are in Northwest Florida on the Gulf, parallel with US 98. Where else can you swim in gentle, crystal-clear waters without doing the cold midriff, tippy-toe dance as you wait for your body temperature to adjust to the water?

On a tip from friend John McEver of Boating Life magazine, I spent a glorious day in New Smyrna Beach this past Sunday at Smyrna Dunes Park. My family and I hiked about a mile on the boardwalk through huge expanses of Florida scrub with a view of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse across the water (hint: wear sneakers and pack light).
