A Day at Golden Beach

Town of Golden Beach

It’s a gem of a town. All 1.8 miles of it. At 81-years-old, Golden Beach is a private oceanfront enclave that’s sandwiched between coastal Hallandale Beach to the north and Sunny Isles Beach to the south. Blink as you drive through and you just might miss it.

Lobster Stew to Die For

Here's a declaration: The Locke-Ober's lobster stew at the new Cape Cod Room restaurant (305.864.1262) in Miami Beach just might be the most delicious soup I've ever tasted. The Chef told me it takes three labor-intensive days to create-seriously. Tucked into the exclusive Bath Club on Collins Avenue, the restaurant is hardly haunted by its past (it was a cafeteria in the 1950s-bet that crowd was known for swim caps with flowers on top). Today's clientele is still fashionable, as is the ambience.

New in Midtown Miami

Midtown is no longer no man's land. Ever since the Miami neighborhood debuted a couple of years ago, there was little but slick condo towers, a Target and Loehman's. Today, two new European-inspired hot spots stand a chance of luring folks away from downtown and the neighboring Design District. Low-slung sofas, plush, zebra-striped rugs and a bevy of bartenders that look like they belong on a hip, MTV reality show give the Bardot lounge (bardotmiami.com) a dark and sexy vibe - as does co-owner Josh Fisher.

This Old House – and Museum

During a recent week in Destin, I dined in an old house-turned-restaurant where the comfort food tasted like mom whipped it up – or in this case, dad. Tom Rice owns and runs the Magnolia Grill (magnoliagrillfwb.com) tucked behind massive oak trees in the slightly shabby historic district of Fort Walton Beach.

In Good Company

What housing slump? It was a field day for dapper real estate moguls when Trump Hollywood (trumphollywood.com) recently made its debut. The latest luxury condo with 200 residences - priced from an estimated $1.3 to $7 million -is the collaboration between the Related Group and Donald Trump. On hand epitomizing the glam (big time) were Related Group's Jorge Perez and Donald Trump, Jr., both nattily-clad. On Ocean Drive just south of Hollywood Blvd., Trump Hollywood's glass tower is style galore.

Weekend in Hollywood

Lounging in a cabana (with Wi-Fi) on Hollywood Beach seemed like the perfect way to wile away a Saturday. On the sand across from the Marriott (hollywoodbeachmarriott.com) - a fave place of mine to stay - the Atlantic was irresistible, especially since summer arrived with gusto (umm, it was nearly 100 degrees).  As island tunes from the Marriott pool wafted my way, I decided dinner would be at Lola's on Harrison (lolasonharrison.com).

Apparently, when you discover the secret to happiness, it makes you want to toast, "to passion!" At least that's what a group of us did this past weekend in Rosemary Beach (rosemarybeach.com), the seaside community on a pristine stretch of North Florida. Between the young couples straight out of a J.

Keeping it local

On the Treasure Coast, near exit 118 off I-95, I recently discovered a land of "Tradition," a master-planned community in Port St. Lucie with an eco undertaking like none other: the HGTV Green Home Giveaway (hgtv.com/green-home). Michael Carlson, the architect who designed the Spanish-style cottage, tells me this is the first of many lots primed to create a full-fledged green neighborhood.

Dune Living

I'm a lucky girl. I just snuck a peak at the work of one of the greats of mid-century modern architecture, the Jacksonville-based William Morgan (williammorganarchitects.com). It's the über-cool Morgan Dune House at 1941-1943 Beach Avenue (or as Morgan prefers, Dunehouses), a futuristic duplex-style home with a design often referred to as earth architecture because of the way it fits into the landscape like a puzzle piece. Want to check it out for yourself?
