Beneath the Waves, a painting by Christopher M. Still

Have a chat with the friendly concierge at the casually elegant Sandpearl Resort on Clearwater Beach about the day’s activities (dolphin-sighting excursions on the Gulf!) and also where to dine (Tate Island Grill) — then step back and take in an extraordinary painting that brings the life of the local eco-system smack before your eyes. Artist Christopher M. Still, a native Floridian, was commissioned by the resort to create a painting filled with meaningful images related to the locale. The focus of Beneath the Waves: What’s directly outside, in particular, beyond the velvet sands in the Gulf of Mexico. The colors are mesmerizing with sea greens, creamy seashell hues and deep marine blues.

Clearwater Beach and Caladesi Island are showcased with 30 elements, including sand dollars, loggerhead sea turtles, horseshoe crabs, marine algae and sheepshead. There’s even a key (room 122) from the original 1918 Clearwater Beach Hotel, the footprint of where the Sandpearl Resort sits today.
