Car Culture as Art

Car Culture as Art

When I found myself face to face with a silver '55 Cadillac Eldorado, a '71 Lamborghini Miura and a midnight-blue '60 Sunbeam with leather straps holding down the hood, I expected a James Bond-like character to whisk me away for a spin. (Hey, I can dream can't I?) This past weekend, the Creative Workshop in Dania Beach, a classic car restoration firm, kicked-off A Very Wolfsonian Weekend in celebration of Miami's Wolfsonian Museum founder Micky Wolfson's 70th birthday. The theme: cars, design and art. Seeing Wolfson's handlebar moustache and Nehru jacket was priceless. Bernard Zyscovich of Miami's Zyscovich Architects described the cars as only someone with his eye would: a motor was shaped like a "chrome bento box," while a '53 Stanguellini Bialbero roadster emulated a "symmetrical red slipper." Tapped as guest speaker, Chris Bangle, the former chief of design at the BMW Group, shared hundred of images coalescing art and car design. "How amusing," noted Wolfson. I certainly second that.
