Chihuly Art Unveiled in St. Pete
Well on its way to being Florida’s next artsy town, St. Petersburg debuted the Chihuly Collection (chihulycollectionstpete.com) last weekend, welcoming the works of Seattle artist Dale Chihuly, a pioneer of the studio glass movement, to a sleek venue on Beach Drive, just steps from the downtown waterfront. A fan of his colorful glass sculptures, I was thrilled to be among the first to walk through the intimate galleries and applaud the wide range of works: paint-splashed drawings, Alice-in-Wonderland flowers, and a boat installation overflowing with vibrantly colored glass balls. Without a doubt my favorite was the Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier, which I lingered over to exam its sharp glass points. (You might want to peek into the neighboring Renaissance Vinoy Resort’s (vinoyrenaissanceresort.com) ballroom where a stunning white Chihuly chandelier hangs.) Only a few blocks from the Chihuly Collection is the just-opened Glass Studio & Hot Shop (moreanartscenter.org), complete with 2,000-degree-hot pot furnaces and long pipes for twirling and blowing melted glass. A cousin to the Chihuly Collection, the hot shop is where a team of artists demonstrates the art form, and for $50 they’ll help you make a glass fish. (Stay tune for St. Pete’s next artsy debut: the brand-new Salvador Dali Museum in Jan. 2011).

Our generation's Tiffany,
Our generation's Tiffany, Dale Chihuly is bringing back the thrill of art recognition for style and international beauty. The amazing thing is that it is in his life time (and ours!!!) Kansas City has some of his work in the Kemper Museum, and we have travelled to Nassau's Atlantis Resort and admired chandeliers in their casino.
