On a recent trip to Miami Beach I found the perfect spot to set up home base for a pedestrian tour of the “new” Sunny Isles Beach. Marenas Resort, tucked oceanside along the strip, is a tall handsome tower that contrasts with the memory of roadside motels that lined Miami Beach’s Highway A1A (Collins Ave.) decades ago. Huge suites, with balconies and views of the sandy stretch, are designed with clean, contemporary lines, leaving plenty of clutter-free space, which families love. The resort’s concierge service was a plus. Want a massage? The concierge will set it up pronto with no need for an advanced appointment. Walking is popular here. Guests either hit the sands, strolling past the resort’s sandcastle area where youngsters build forts and looking up at sleek, new high-rises that recently sprouted up, or they trek the sidewalks to nearby shops and restaurants. Just a vigorous hike away is Epicure where you can grab coffee and a Danish or bring back seafood salad, goat cheese, hot ribs or chicken to eat in the room.
