Flagler Beach's Island Cottage Oceanfront Inn
One of my favorite places to fall off the grid is the small coastal town of Flagler Beach. Just across the highway from the orange-tinted Atlantic shore, which runs the north-south length of the town, sits the Island Cottage Oceanfront Inn. This unpretentious bed and breakfast just north of Daytona Beach is a quiet hideaway, run by Toni and Mark Treworgy. It has a pretty spa with a rock garden courtyard. The adjacent gift shop is stocked with fragrant soaps and bath salts to complement your spa treatment and Toni’s Florida landscape paintings adorn the walls. (They’re also for sale.) Toni likes to tout the cozy inn as a romantic spot for endless pampering, but I found that, besides the memorable breakfast of bananas Foster French toast with candied pecans, the inn’s location just steps from the Atlantic Ocean is unbeatable. I could hear the waves in the night’s pitch-black air, and in the morning when I walked the shoreline, it was only the seabirds and me. Now that’s falling off the grid.
