Viva Florida 500: Have Tea at Café des Beaux-Arts
A visit to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach is an introduction to Henry Flagler’s lifestyle. The industrialist, who built Florida’s first railway and some of its most extravagant hotels at the turn of the 19th century, also built Whitehall, a house of marble, for his third bride, Mary Lily Kenan. Through March 30, you can partake in the fashion of afternoon tea at Whitehall, which is now the museum; it’s served in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Designed as a railway palace with a high glass ceiling and arched windows, the space is converted into a tearoom with tables dressed in floral linens. Order the Whitehall special blend tea and pair it with the tea sandwiches, from cucumber with cream cheese to whipped salmon on pumpernickel, as well as sweets like scones with cranberries and miniature cream puffs. Tea is served Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m. You can purchase tickets ($40) online at flagler museum.us.
This event is part of Visit Florida's Viva 500 commemoration, honoring the anniversary of Ponce de Leon's landing in Florida. Find more events around Florida at Florida Travel + Life's new events calendar.
