He’s Back. Norman’s 180 Opens in Coral Gables
Chef Norman Van Aken has done it again. The arrival of Norman’s 180 (305.529.5180) is hot news for South Florida foodies who lovingly embraced Norman's fusion of flavors and his forte for creatively bringing New World Cuisine to our palates. Savor classic Van Aken fare (with a twist) at his new digs at the Westin Colonnade in Coral Gables at 180 Aragon Avenue.
At first glance, there’s quite a bit of Americana on the menu, including some of the best fried chicken ever, paired with braised collards, mashed Yukon golds and rich, yummy turkey gravy. The duck meatballs on the small plates menu with carrot-parsnip mash and Marsala-mustard reduction are a winner too. One of the reasons Norman’s food is so delicious is his use of seasonal and local ingredients. This remains true with his pursuit of farm to table, a definitive approach here. Look for free-range Hereford pork that hails from a farm in Avon, FL, along with local clams, Redlands fruit and other wonderful stuff.
And for anyone who recalls the old Doc Dammers that once occupied the space, those days are mere memories. Norman’s 180 has it's own relaxed style, with a seriously sophisticated vibe. There’s an open theater kitchen enabling diners to watch all the action and a wrap-around bar that lures you in with literary quotes etched into the columns. While this is certainly an engaging conversation piece, I’m headed back for the food.
