It's Mullet Toss Time at the Flora-Bama in Perdido Key

The scene at Flora-Bama Lounge (pronounced like the state, not the President) is all country, but it also jams with rock ‘n roll. A Perdido Key must destination; this landmark's been around since the mid-1960s. If only the walls could talk. I'm just saying. You'll find music emanating from multiple stages and you could easily spend hours and hours there, as I did, when I recently visited the famed hot spot.

This weekend is the outrageous Interstate Mullet Toss. It’s a competition to see who can throw mullets (yes, the fish) the furthest away from the Alabama state line onto the Florida-based Flora-Bama beach. The western end of the Flora-Bama property marks the demarcation between the Sunshine State and sweet home Alabama (Orange Beach, Alabama, to be exact). Let the games begin! The unique Gulf setting and ramshackle ambience is a must whether it’s Mullet Toss weekend or not (Flora-Bama is open 365 days of the year). Order up some steamed royal reds and oysters Perdido from the kitchen, hang with the friendly folk, and be sure to have a Bushwacker (a favorite alcoholic milkshake in these parts). From personal experience, it's delicious and goes down way too easy.

When you're there, please say hi to the “Bama” for me (that's what the locals call it), have a cocktail and groove to the tunes. It really is fun, fun, fun.
