Overnight in Fernandina Beach's Blue Heron Inn

Breakfast on the terrace at Blue Heron Inn

My morning at the Blue Heron Inn began with the sound of birds chirping as I awoke in my sun-washed first-floor room, appropriately dubbed the Heron.

After a delicious breakfast prepared by innkeeper Julie Jones, which included a mini tomato-herb frittata, glazed bacon with pecan topping and zucchini walnut bread, along with orange juice served with a scoop of orange sherbet (a refreshing and old-fashioned touch that just seemed to fit the surroundings), I went to the historic waterfront where I found David Edwards (a.k.a. Trolley Dave) of Amelia Island Trolleys. An affable fellow who takes folks on 90-minute tours about town, Edwards is a hoot. His drawl delivery coupled with hard to believe factoids is a fun-filled way to learn about this picturesque and architecturally striking northeastern city.

Look for more on Fernandina Beach in our upcoming road trip feature in the May/June issue of FT+L.
