A perfect day in New Smyrna Beach

A perfect day in New Smyrna Beach

May 4th, 2009

On a tip from friend John McEver of Boating Life magazine, I spent a glorious day in New Smyrna Beach this past Sunday at Smyrna Dunes Park. My family and I hiked about a mile on the boardwalk through huge expanses of Florida scrub with a view of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse across the water (hint: wear sneakers and pack light). On the inlet side of the jetty, where tons of fishermen were casting lines and cars aren't allowed, the beach was as wide as they come, and the waves perfect for teaching my son the many joys of skim boarding (he's three, but you have to start these Florida kids early). Afterward, we drove to the 30-year-old JB's Fish Camp on the Indian River (jbsfishcamp.com) and indulged in yet another great fish sandwich (it was basa and not local, but who cares when it's that tasty?). The huge hush puppies with jalapeño peppers were a hit with us, too. Hang out on the dock here long enough and you'll likely see dolphins (we did), and if you're the adventure type, kayaks and eco-tours are right next door.
