I had quite an entertaining evening recently at RA Sushi Bar & Restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens located Downtown at the Gardens. Asked to be a guest judge at a charity event involving inspired sushi rolls, I was all in. There were four sushi rolls created by four charities: South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and Make a Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. RA Sushi, with its swanky red and black interior, was buzzing with volunteers from these noteworthy charities eager to have their sushi deemed the crowd fave. All were vying for a chance to have their charity’s roll on the RA Sushi menu for the month of August, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the winning charity.

While all the sushi rolls were distinctly unique and engaging—with concoctions including mango, kiwi, cream cheese and sautéed nuts rolled in rice and seaweed, garnished with kiwi sauce on the side—I was drawn to the one that packed some heat. I was not alone. The team of judges (four in total) concurred: Susan G. Komen’s Roll for the Cure was victorious. It’s visually appealing and full of taste! Composed of tuna, yellowtail, avocado, cucumber and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed, the kicker that made it an absolute perfect sushi bite was a topping of spicy mayo and sliced jalapeno.
