Second Saturday Art Walk at Wynwood Walls
Miami's Wynwood Art Walk held on the second Saturday of the month is a must happening. After a flawless meal at Joey’s (don't miss the tiramisu), I was enthralled and inspired by the genius of the Wynwood Walls and all its trappings.
Located at NW Second Avenue – between Joey’s Italian Café on 25th Street and Wynwood Kitchen & Bar on 26th Street — you’ll find Wynwood Walls. Especially during Wynwood Art Walk, this is the definitive spot to hang for art, music, cocktails and people watching. There’s much to see from old school graffiti artists — including the wall shown here — a mural by Ron English, who coined the term POPaganda. I took it in as a colorful, dreamy homage to culture, superheros and more. This visual conversation piece is made even more compelling by the English-designed deer sculpture (several dot the ground here). There’s an original breathtaking wall mural by Shepard Fairey (it repeats in spectacular fashion in Wynwood Kitchen & Bar) and a psychedelic Airstream trailer by Kenny Scharf that’s an absolute kick to step through.
Wynwood Walls hours are Wednesday-Saturday from noon-10 p.m.; open the second Saturday of each month from noon-11 p.m., in conjunction with Wynwood Art Walk. Open daily during Art Basel, November 29-December 5, noon - 11 p.m.
Look for more on Wynwood Walls and lots of exciting new elements in conjunction with Art Basel in the November/December issue of FT+L.
