Viva Florida 500: Daytona 500 Races This Weekend

Daytona 500

This year, “500” stands for more than the length of the premier NASCAR event in Daytona Beach. As the stock cars zoom around the track at Daytona International Speedway, each mile represents a year of Florida’s history since Juan Ponce de Leon landed on our shores half a millennia ago.

Many of auto racing’s roots are planted firmly in Florida, from the early 1900s on, when cars built for speed used the sands of Daytona Beach as a track, leading to the Daytona 500 being the most-watched race in the country — all on a track where history has been made too many times to count.

Race-day festivities get started early, with the Sprint FANZONE opening at 7 am. Fans can watch drivers tuning their cars, tour the garages, eat and drink at the open-air Budweiser Bistro and catch a live performance by the Zac Brown Band — all before the engines roar and the green flag signals the start of the race at 1 pm. Get tickets here.

For more interactive fun, register for a custom credential lanyard that will allow you to take green-screen photos around the speedway to post to Facebook and enter you to win race-day prizes.

This event is part of Visit Florida's Viva 500 commemoration, honoring the anniversary of Ponce de Leon's landing in Florida. Find more events around Florida at Florida Travel + Life's new events calendar.
