I might be a fan of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man films, but when I heard there was a spa offering Iron Mask facials, I couldn’t help but think this sounds just a bit crazy. Developed by the Northern Italian company, Dermophisiologique, I was nonetheless intrigued. Beauté Spa at Beaute´Therapies in West Palm Beach is one of only a handful of U.S.-based spas now offering this specialized treatment.  It involves the actual use of a hand-held block magnet (and a magnetic field) to extract impurities from the skin. I felt only a slight resistance pull — almost akin to the sensation you experience when two ends of a magnet that are the same push each other apart. Come on, didn’t you ever do that as a kid?

As I was in the thick of it, having my face undergo this wacky detox, I knew exactly what it reminded me of — a weird high school science project gone upscale! The ingredients of the blue-ish gray soothing mask work in conjunction with the magnet. The organic mix includes ultrafine ground iron micro spheres with zinc oxide, beeswax and black-currant oil. When finished, my revitalized skin was toned and luminous in a post-Iron Mask glow. Doesn’t that say it all?
