Windsurfing at Anastasia Island State Park
On a recent trip to historic St. Augustine, I was surprised to discover windsurfing at nearby Anastasia Island State Park, just a short ride from the Old City across the Bridge of Lions. The park is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Salt Run, a three-mile tidal lagoon, where instructors from Anastasia Water Sports teach first-time students like me how to handle the board and maneuver the boom and mast. Sand dunes protect Salt Run from the ocean, and the sea breeze in this area makes it ideal for getting the wind in your sails. If you feel a little insecure (I certainly did), owners Linda and Jim Craig will sail beside you till you get your windsurfer legs. Of course, if you’re experienced, this is a great launching spot. Rates are $25 for one hour; $40 for two; and $60 for three hours.
