  • Peabody Ducks
Even though I’m a 20-year resident of Orlando, I had yet to make it down to the Peabody hotel to behold the famous marching of the Peabody ducks. This past Monday evening, I got to see the winged waddlers walk the red carpet, led by their gold-and-crimson-clad duck master, to the timbres of John Philip Sousa's “King Cotton March.”
  • Presidential Suite, Waldorf Astoria
When friends started calling me “The First Lady” I knew I was in for a real treat (and ribbing) when I had a chance to stay in the Presidential Suite of the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando. I was right. Walking across the lobby’s exquisite marble floors, I recognized the Tower Clock immediately. It is a reproduction of the iconic ticker at the classic Waldorf in Manhattan. How wonderful!
  • Shula's 347 Grill
Football, steak and coach Don Shula are as American as apple pie. Since retiring from the game, Shula has built an empire around red meat. The latest addition is Shula’s 347 Grill.
  • Seared Columbia River salmon on English pea risotto
It seems like just yesterday that I was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Disney World’s California Grill, the 15th-floor restaurant in the Contemporary Resort where the entertainment giant’s climb up the gourmet ladder began. Today we gathered to toast the restaurant’s 15th anniversary with a lunch prepared by chef Brian Piasecki and complemented with California wines selected by sommelier Bridget Sherren.
  • A Fresh Perspective
Soft music, flickering candles, fluffy white robes and a deep exhale–that’s what I found at Orlando’s newly opened Fresh Med Spas. Peaceful trees and birds adorn the robin egg-blue and white walls, creating a tranquil setting. Before my session, spa therapist Wendy helped me determine my needs. We discussed a possible regiment and she gave me tips on how to achieve my goals.
  • Le Corsaire
Wrapping up a successful first season as the Orlando Ballet’s new Artistic Director, Robert Hill is bringing his diverse mix of modern and classical ballet full circle with a season finale that promises to be as exciting as ever.
  • The Orlando Ballet Company
“War, what is it good for?” Well quite a lot actually. At least this Friday night when the Orlando Ballet’s Patric Palkens takes to the stage at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center for his passionate solo to the iconic 1969 Edwin Starr classic “War”. Yes, you heard it right. That’s ballet and Edwin Starr. And Shriley Bassey and Frank Sinatra and George Michael…

Walking into the Contemporary Resort (disneyworld.com) in Lake Buena Vista had me feeling like a kid again. I instantly craved one of those great Mickey Bars (vanilla ice cream enrobed by divine dark chocolate). Yum. Resort rooms are beautifully appointed. The bathroom is especially posh. And still, from the interior halls (as you enter and exit your room), you glimpse the monorail running through. Dining-wise, the Wave is casual cool with a sea blue interior.

One good thing about the down-in-the-dumps economy is that the price of wine-paired dinners has dropped. The last few years prices skyrocketed to way over $100 per person, closer to $200. Now the cost is so reasonable that there's really no excuse not to indulge. So I did just that at the Everglades Restaurant in the Rosen Centre hotel (rosencentre.com) on Orlando's International Drive, where $65 gets you a five-course menu with pairings.

After living in London for 10 years, spoiled with some of the greatest theater, music and dance performances on my doorstep, I haven't made much of an effort to seek out the arts since moving to Orlando.
