When friends started calling me “The First Lady” I knew I was in for a real treat (and ribbing) when I had a chance to stay in the Presidential Suite of the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando. I was right. Walking across the lobby’s exquisite marble floors, I recognized the Tower Clock immediately. It is a reproduction of the iconic ticker at the classic Waldorf in Manhattan. How wonderful!

From the outside, Orlando's new Waldorf Astoria (waldorfastoriaorlando.com) surprised me. Little did I know that the nondescript building-tall, geometric, nice but not particularly awe-inspiring-belied what awaited inside: A soaring dome ceiling with unbelievable detailing (hand-painted? Fabric? I'm not sure what's up there, but it's gorgeous).

Confirmed less than 24 hours before the ribbon cutting, the appearance of Governor Charlie Crist at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando (waldorfastoriaorlando.com), the first to open outside New York City, surprised guests and signaled just how important tourism is to Florida.
