The custom of placing a mat in front of a door to welcome guests – and get them to scrape the dirt off their shoes before entering – dates back only to the early 1900s. (Funny, we expected to find examples of Egyptian welcome mats made of papyrus during our research.) While the most common construction of door mats changes from country to country, here in the U.S. we tend to opt for the most practical kind – whatever keeps our floors the cleanest.
The messages and designs on door mats can range from simple to whimsical, so picking one out for your home really comes down to your own needs and personality. Here are several door mats we think would look good anywhere, including our home state of Florida.
Eco-friendly
What’s the No. 1 job of any door mat? To keep the dirt out! That’s why Ubdyo mats are designed with a special pattern that practically scrapes the dirt off your shoes. A non-slip rubber backing keeps it in place. To clean it, just hose it down and you’re all set. Better yet – it’s made with high quality 100 percent recycled PVC so it’s environmentally friendly.
Easy to Clean
They call them “welcome mats” for a reason, right? This model features deep raised grooves to remove dirt or mud from your shoes. Just give it an occasional rinse with the hose, and you’re good to go. You’re welcome.
Durable construction
The “hello” message is adorable, but flip it over and you’ll see the question: “Looking for hidden keys?” (Ummm, no. Honest.) We love that! By the way, if you’re wondering what “coconut coir fiber” is, it’s one of the strongest natural fibers out there. But you can still clean this mat off with a broom or a garden hose.
Made in the shade
What Floridian can resist a welcome mat featuring palm trees? Let this mat set the relaxed tone for your home in the Sunshine State. All you’re missing now is a doorbell set to a Jimmy Buffet tune.
