Key West’s biggest summer events honor Ernest Hemingway, who made his home on the island for more than 10 years. (The Hemingway Home continues to be a top tourist attraction.) The annual Hemingway Days celebration returns this year after the 2020 cancellation due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. This year’s event includes literary readings, a three-day marlin tournament, paddleboard race and 5K run, and the fan-favorite — Sloppy Joe’s Look-Alike Contest and Birthday Party. (Papa was born on July 21.)
July 20 – 25, 2021
The Big Attraction:
It’s the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, of course. And where else to hold the event than Sloppy Joe’s, the bar that has become synonymous with the author.
If you love cats, be sure to pet any of the dozens of six-toed cats that live on the grounds of the Hemingway Home. The cats are descendants from Ernest’s original pets. Visitors to the home rave about the personality of the cats AND the guides, who offer quirky but educational tours of the property.
