The pride is back in South Florida as the University of Miami Hurricanes – as their nickname implies – is ready to sweep back over the nation of college football. The Hurricanes are once again considered among the elite teams in the country and are poised to relive the school’s glory days of previous decades. If you’re a UM fan in need of gameday gear, here are some suggestions.

Here’s to happy hour
Have you ever been curious why a “U” is the symbol at Miami instead of an “M?” It dates back to 1973 when the school’s athletic fundraising arm commissioned a new logo for the sports teams. Attempting the avoid the glut of other “UM” options already shared by other colleges, Miami designer Bill Bodenhamer suggested the “U” idea based on slogans such as “U gotta believe” and “U is great.” Celebrate his clever idea with these finely etched glasses featuring a satin finish.

South Florida pride
Miami fans are known to do JUST a little boasting when it comes to showing support for “The U.” This “Straight Outta The 305” shirt is a natural fit for hardcore alumni and local fans. The shirt features Miami’s official school colors as chosen back in 1926: Orange represents the fruit of the orange tree, while green honors the leaves, and white beckons the blossoms.

Alternate look
If you don’t own a few mini-helmets, are you even a true football fan? (I own a college one, NFL, USFL and even an Arena Football League mini-helmet). This alternate helmet is 5 inches tall and is just itching for a return to greatness. Did you know that following the departure of Lou Saban as head coach in 1978, the school’s board of trustees held a vote on whether to drop the football program entirely? The measure failed and Howard Schnellenberger, the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, was hired. He would soon lead Miami to its first national title.

For chillier nights
This 46-inch by 60-inch throw blanket has a design on it that will scare away any Gator or Seminole fans. Just make sure to machine wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle. After the Saban and Schnellenberger eras, many other legendary coaches have taken over at Miami over the years, including Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson and now Hurricane alumnus Mario Cristobal.
