Streaming services are great ways to entertain yourself, but sometimes you crave a deeper dive into your favorite movie genre. If the weather outside is gloomy – or you just need some quality time on the couch – here are four movie DVD sets that we recommend.
Catch the Magic
There were eight Harry Potter films? Wow. (Remember the final book was split into two movies.) This set includes – take a deep breath – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Goblet of Fire, the Order of the Phoenix, the Half-Blood Prince and parts 1 and 2 of the Deathly Hallows.
A Bite From the Night
Can you name them all? First it was 2008’s Twilight followed by New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Critical reviews of the series were mixed – parents just don’t understand – but movie-goers loved the flicks, which eventually earned more than $3 billion worldwide. The movies are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
An Offer You Can’t Refuse
The three crime films – directed by Francis Ford Coppola and inspired by the novel by Mario Puzo – have been the darlings of movie critics for decades. (Well, the first two movies anyway.) The cast is a who’s who of cinema – Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Marlon Brando, John Cazale, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall and James Caan for starters. It’s available on DVD and Blu-ray. If you prefer to see the series’ events presented in chronological order, find The Godfather Saga, a 1977 TV miniseries that combined the first two movies in the series.
You Don’t Know Jack
Name all the movie Jack Ryans you can: Alec Baldwin played him in the first movie – The Hunt for Red October. Harrison Ford took over for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck played Jack in Sum of All Fears, which basically reset the time frame on the series. And finally Chris Pine was our final movie Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. (Special bonus to anyone who named John Krasinski as Jack in the Amazon Prime TV series). The movies are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
