Believe it or not, the Miami Hurricanes football program and their stormy nickname dates back to 1926 and the “Great Miami Hurricane” of that fall that decimated South Florida. That year a freshman team from the university first took the field. They finished the inaugural season undefeated and with appropriate swagger decided to adopt “hurricanes” as their team name going forward.
