Orlando, the most popular tourist destination in the country, is gearing up for a busy Memorial Day weekend as more than 1.1 million passengers, or approximately 16 percent more passengers than last year, will transit through Orlando International Airport (MCO) during the course of the seven-day travel period.

Memorial Day is often seen as the unofficial beginning of the summer travel season. Early indicators point to a busy summer for MCO, the international gateway to Central Florida, including higher demand, an increase in airline service, and increased seat capacity.

The busiest day is anticipated to be Saturday, May 27, with almost 170,000 passengers expected.

MCO intends to open the West Park Place parking lot in support of all other airport garages and lots for Memorial Day in anticipation of higher parking demand. 3,100 extra spaces will be made available at West Park Place on Tradeport Drive.

For the most recent parking information, drivers are invited to visit Home – Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

Officials from the Orlando airport have some further travel advice for the coming summer:

  • If you misplace your driver’s license, alternative kinds of identification, such as passports, military IDs, tribal IDs, and trusted traveler IDs, may be accepted.
  • It is advised to wear socks and slip-on shoes.
  • Keep your jewelry on while being screened.
  • Keep in mind that everything electronic larger than a cell phone needs to go through screening in its own bin.
