Becoming a Weeki Wachee Mermaid

See what it takes to wear that famous Florida tail

Enthusiasts of kitschy Florida are well aware of Weeki Wachee Springs and the beloved tourist attraction featuring graceful mermaids swimming about for sold-out shows in the 18-seat submerged theater. The show debuted in 1947 and today, crowds still flock to witness daily performances (the attraction is open 365 days a year). Children and adults alike are enchanted by the balletic moves of the mermaids from beginning to end. The mermaids have such perfect synchronization, it’s almost as if their hoses seem to just disappear.
