The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl is a college football bowl game that will feature two college football teams (Purdue and LSU for the 2023 edition). The game is played on January 2, 2023, and will start at 1 p.m.
The seventh-oldest collegiate bowl game, the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl began in Orlando as the Tangerine Bowl in 1947. Since 1993 the Citrus Bowl – it’s had a number of sponsors over the years – has hosted top teams from the Big Ten Conference and Southeastern Conference.
In the new College Football Playoff era of college football’s postseason, the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl will continue to host the top Big Ten and SEC teams from outside the CFP series of bowls (which includes the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Orange, Cotton and Peach bowls).
The game moved to a New Year’s Day date in 1987 and has remained a New Year’s Day tradition except in years when the holiday falls on a Sunday. (Hence, it’s played on Monday, Jan. 2, in 2023.)
